With government-college seats limited and private MBBS costing ₹60 lakh–₹1 crore, studying MBBS abroad at ₹18–45 lakh total looks attractive. It can be a great path — and a costly trap if chosen blindly. Here's the honest breakdown: countries, real costs, the rules (yes, NEET matters), and the process.
Country comparison (2026)
| Country | Total tuition (5–6 yrs) | Living cost/yr | Medium | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Russia | ₹22–35 lakh | ₹1.5–2.5 lakh | English | Established universities, large Indian student community |
| Kyrgyzstan | ₹18–28 lakh | ₹1.2–2 lakh | English | Budget-friendly, simpler admission |
| Kazakhstan | ₹20–32 lakh | ₹1.2–2 lakh | English | Balanced cost, improving universities |
| Georgia | ₹28–45 lakh | ₹2–3 lakh | English | European lifestyle, ECFMG-friendly pathway |
Private MBBS in India, for comparison: ₹60 lakh–₹1 crore+. Abroad can be 2–4× cheaper — but only if you choose NMC-compliant universities.
The NMC rules that decide your future (read twice)
To practise in India after a foreign medical degree, the FMGL (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate) route requires:
- Duration: the course must be at least 54 months + a 12-month internship at the same university
- Full course abroad: the entire degree (including internship) must be completed in the foreign country — no flying back midway
- English medium: the course must be taught in English
- NEXT exam: after returning, you must pass the National Exit Test (same exam as Indian graduates)
This is why university selection matters more than country selection — a cheap university that violates NMC norms wastes your entire investment.
Eligibility checklist
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology — typically 50%+ in PCB (40% for reserved categories)
- NEET-UG qualified (any year — the score stays valid for abroad admission under current rules)
- Minimum age 17 by December 31 of the admission year
- Valid passport (start this early — it takes weeks)
The admission process, step by step
- Shortlist universities — NMC-compliant, English-medium, with published fee structures. We maintain a vetted list per country.
- Get the admission letter from the university directly (through a registered counsellor — never pay "donations")
- Documentation: notarised marksheets, passport, medical tests, police clearance
- Invitation letter + visa — the university's invitation letter drives the student-visa application
- Travel + registration — universities typically receive students in batches (Sep–Nov intake)
Budget beyond tuition — the honest numbers
- Food + hostel: ₹1.2–3 lakh/year depending on country and city
- Insurance, visa renewals, local registration: ₹30,000–50,000/year
- Travel: 1–2 India visits/year — ₹40,000–80,000
- Realistic total for Russia (tuition + living): ₹30–45 lakh over 6 years
Red flags — when to walk away
- "MBBS abroad without NEET" promises
- Universities not listed by NMC/WDMS or offering part-abroad, part-India arrangements
- Agents demanding cash "donations" or refusing direct university contact
- Fees quoted only "in total, all-inclusive" without a university-issued breakdown
