Before taking an education loan, check scholarships — free money you never repay. The catch: most students miss them because deadlines are early and documents pile up. This list covers the schemes our counsellors actually help students apply for, every year.
1. Government scholarships (National Scholarship Portal)
Portal: scholarships.gov.in — one registration, multiple central schemes:
- Pre-Matric & Post-Matric (SC/ST/OBC/Minority) — tuition reimbursement + maintenance allowance; family-income caps apply (usually ₹2.5 lakh for pre-matric, ₹2.5–3 lakh post-matric depending on scheme)
- Central Sector Scheme (CSSS) — ₹7,500–₹10,000/year for top Class 12 scorers going into UG courses
- National Means-cum-Merit (NMMS) — Class 9–12, for students from families under ₹1.5 lakh income
2. State scholarship portals
Every state runs its own schemes on top of central ones — MP students should check the MP state scholarship portal; similar portals exist for UP, Rajasthan and others. State schemes often have higher income limits and less competition than central ones. Your college's admission cell or we can point you to the current-year forms.
3. University merit scholarships (often the biggest)
| Type | Typical waiver | Based on |
|---|---|---|
| Private-university merit awards | 20–50% of tuition | Class 12 marks or their entrance test |
| Early-bird admissions | 5–15% | Applying before the deadline |
| Special categories | 10–25% | Girl students, siblings, alumni wards, sports |
Universities like LPU, Mangalayatan and others in our partner list publish scholarship slabs openly — a student with strong Class 12 marks can cut fees dramatically just by applying right.
4. Private trusts and foundations
- Sitaram Jindal Foundation — ₹500–₹2,500/month for diploma, UG and technical courses
- Mahindra All India Talent Scholarship — for students joining government polytechnics
- ONGC / Coal India / other PSU scholarships — for SC/ST/OBC students in professional courses
- State-level foundations — most states have 1–2 active trusts; check with us for your district
How to apply — a process that works
- Collect documents once: Aadhaar, income certificate, caste certificate (if applicable), previous marksheets, bank passbook, fee receipt, photo
- Register on NSP with a correct mobile number — all communication lands there
- Apply to state portal + university + 1–2 trusts — parallel applications are allowed and normal
- Track status weekly — most rejections are document mismatches, fixable within the window
- Keep photocopies of everything submitted — institutes ask again at verification
Common mistakes that kill applications
- Income/caste certificate older than the required format year — renew before applying
- Bank account not linked to Aadhaar — scholarship money bounces back
- Name spelled differently across documents — fix via Aadhaar update first
- Missing the institute verification step after selection
